Methodology

Last reviewed: July 2026

Every calculator on Nestiex uses transparent, industry-standard formulas. This page documents exactly how each result is produced so you can verify the numbers and understand their limits.

Volume (cubic yards)

We convert your measurements to feet, multiply length × width × depth to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 (there are 27 cubic feet in one cubic yard):

Cubic yards = (length ft × width ft × depth ft) ÷ 27

Depth entered in inches is divided by 12 to convert to feet. Metric inputs are converted using 1 m = 3.28084 ft.

Weight (tons)

Gravel weight depends on stone type and moisture. We use a typical bulk density of about 1.4 US tons per cubic yard for standard dry gravel, with these adjustments offered where relevant: pea gravel ≈ 1.35, crushed stone ≈ 1.5, and wet gravel ≈ 1.7 tons per cubic yard. Tons = cubic yards × density.

Bags

Bag counts assume a standard 0.5 cubic-foot bag unless another size is selected. Bags = cubic feet ÷ bag size, rounded up. One cubic yard ≈ 54 half-cubic-foot bags.

Cost

Estimated cost = cubic yards × the price per cubic yard you enter. Delivery and taxes are not included, as they vary by supplier and location.

Compaction allowance

For base materials such as crusher run and paver base, we add an optional 10–20% compaction allowance, because these materials settle when compacted to their finished depth.

Rounding and assumptions

Results are rounded for readability (typically two decimals for yards and tons, whole numbers for bags). Our figures are planning estimates. Actual quantities vary with stone size, moisture, delivery losses and site conditions, so we always recommend confirming density and final quantities with your supplier before a large order.
